Maro Fasouli

Maro Fasouli studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (2000–2005), where she also completed her postgraduate studies in the Fine Arts Department. In her work, she revisits traditional art and architecture through the terms of the practice itself, bringing to the surface relationships between embodied practices, labor, and gender. She re-examines traditional techniques through a contemporary lens, connecting physical experience with issues of labor, gender, and material culture. She develops a distinct visual language that redefines weaving beyond its decorative role, focusing instead on its physical, anthropological, and symbolic dimensions. Inspired in part by apotropaic forms, her sculptures often relate to the human body, with her own physique determining their scale and proportions— thereby reinforcing the intimate bond between creator, material, and structure. She is a founding member of the Under Construction Group and has received significant distinctions, including the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Artist Fellowship and the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation Art Prize. Her work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Greece and internationally, reflecting a continuous engagement with folk tradition, architecture, and contemporary artistic practice.
