Alekos Kyrarinis

Alekos Kyrarinis was born in 1976 in Athens and grew up in his place of origin, Tinos. He worked alongside his marble-sculptor father, Yiannis Kyrarinis, from the age of eleven until entering the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) in 1997. He studied at ASFA from 1997 to 2003 under professor Jannis Psychopedis. His body of work encompasses painting, drawing, carved three-dimensional structures, sculpture, and publication illustrations. Originating from foundational experiences and influences—such as the symbols of Orthodox Byzantine iconography and folk tradition— he creates images with distinct references to abstract modernism. He searches for locality and authenticity through archetypal, universal, and timeless symbols. Whether geometrically structured or free-form, his works are shaped as a palimpsest of forms with intertextual, intergenerational, and intercultural connotations. He has illustrated more than ten books and periodical publications, and collaborates with Frear magazine and the Baumstrasse cultural venue. He has also published a short essay book on painting titled Nefeli’s Questions (Οι ερωτήσεις της Νεφέλης, Athens, 2011, published by Mikros Astrolavos/Efthyni). He has held twenty-two solo exhibitions in Greece and abroad, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions. Within the framework of the exhibition of all things visible and invisible (ὁρατῶν τε καί ἀοράτων) at CITRONNE Gallery (2021), he presented the work A Child’s Isokratima [Drone/Accompanying Note], a video featuring a musical composition by Giorgos Koumendakis.
